Selecting between purple and yellow Irish Moss is similar to selecting between purple or green cabbage, purple or white onion, or purple or orange carrots. The truth is that it is all a matter of variety because it is the same plant with a pigment. Instructions for Best Use:
[No Heat – Blender Method]
- In a large container, add the desired amount of Irish moss that you would like to use, and cover it with spring or distilled water. Make sure that the water covers the moss by 2-3 times because the moss will expand when rehydrated.
- Allow the moss to rehydrate for 6-12 hours.
- Pour off the water, and thoroughly rinse your moss (3-4 times) until all the sand/salt has been removed.
- Place your Irish sea moss into your blender.
- Add distilled or spring water until it fills halfway up to the height of your sea moss in the blender.
- Blend until smooth, then store your Irish moss gel in a clean glass container in the refrigerator.
[Using Heat – Boiling Method]
- In a large container, add the desired amount of Irish moss that you would like to use, and cover it with spring or distilled water. Make sure that the water covers the moss by 2-3 times because the moss will expand when rehydrated.
- Allow the moss to rehydrate for 6-12 hours.
- Pour off the water, and thoroughly rinse your moss (3-4 times) until all the sand/salt has been removed.
- Bring a pot of water large enough to hold your Irish Moss to a boil.
- Once the water starts to boil, turn the stove off and place your sea moss into the pot.
- Stir the moss until it dissolves into the water.
- Once all the moss has dissolved, allow it to cool before placing it into the refrigerator.
Usage Suggestions:
- 1-4 Tablespoons (Can be adjusted based on your desired thickness)
Storage:
- Dried: Irish sea moss can be stored for over one (1) year if you store it in a dark cool place (NOT YOUR REFRIGERATOR). Since the salt is a natural preservative it helps to keep your Irish sea moss is good and ready to use.
- Gel: When placed into a glass container, your Irish moss gel can last between 3-4 weeks.
- Soaked: If you are soaking your moss in water, you can leave it in a glass bowl in your refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
